Navnirman Samaj Vikas Kendra

History

Before Navnirman Samaj Vikas Kendra (NSVK) was working in the Northern Mumbai suburb of Malwani, Malad (W), another organisation called Maharashtra Lokhit Seva Mandal was running education, leprosy and malnutrition programmes in the same area.

When present NSVK Managing Director, M. Shridhar Kshirsagar, started to work there as an Education Coordinator, he found out that some frauds were going on in the organisation, involving the Directors and some members of the staff. After several weeks of fights against these practices and with the support of the community, Navnirman was created in June 1996.

At the time of our creation, NSVK didn’t have an FCRA account, necessary to receive funds from foreign organizations. It then started to work as a project of successively Yuva and CSSC up to 2000. That year Navnirman obtained an FCRA account and started to work independently. It was for the organisation a period of unprecedented expansion in staff & activity.

IGP programme, started on a very small scale in 1998, was structured and provided with strong procedures and ambitious objectives in 2000 while FDP & Tuberculosis programmes were developing.
In 2001, Navnirman became a founder member of Uplift India Association, a Network of NGOs of Pune and Mumbai involved in micro finance activities.
To the two old branches of New Collector Compound and Akashwani (located in Malwani itself) were added a new branch in Charlop (Kandivili) in 2003 and in Appapada/Kranti Nagar (Malad East) in 2004.

Due to many demolition campaigns over the past few years, the tensions in this area are quite palpable. There are no basic amenities like water, electricity and toilets. Mainly labourers and semi skilled workers are residing in this area.
